For HD it sits in the locker with a 18.5" barrel (cly. bore,bead sight) and a TacStar +2 extension. Two guns in one! I thought it was perfect and as tacticool as I wanted.May 16, 2022 · Many Ohio deer (pre-straight-wall pistol calibers era) and squirrels fell to both. The 870, with a factory barrel also "reduced to possession" a 34-bar pheasant. With the 21" Rem-Choke barrel it's quick and versatile. Even picked up a muzzleloader barrel for Ohio's special muzzleloader deer season. The maverick 88 will always go bang when you want it to. It uses the Mossberg 500/590/590A1 design. The only difference is that the safety is a cross bolt design rather than a tang mounted safety, and barrel has a less desirable finish that is more prone to rusting.I suggested a Mossberg Maverick 88 Security models with 18.5" barrel or the 20" version that has a longer choke tube so has additional shell capacity. Mossberg has a combo version that includes the 28" field barrel and 18.5" security barrel that could be used for clay target or hunting with the 28" barrel or for home defense with the 18.5" barrel.
