If he's been dry-firing it, it's possible the firing pin is mushroomed slightly or the spot where the firing pin hits on the barrel is peened so there's a dent there now which reduces the force the firing pin can put on it to pinch the rim of the cartridge. On top of that, it barely clears the bolt face. A new pin ordered from Brownells. The pin was listed as "post 1974" so I was not concerned. Duly delivered and it doesn't fit! I saw a Marlin 1897 Texan at an lgs yesterday. Looks like a 20 " octagon barreled 39A takedown. They were available in 1997 as a commemorative. This one is a shooter. Asking was $650. Had safety. You can have extraction problems, with match ammo because of the rim thickness.
