When running at idle the pressure jumps to 80 psi, oscillating between 75 and 85. Disconnecting the vacuum line to the regulator has no effect on the pressure.

The vapor-return line normally runs from the fuel pump or the fuel filter to the fuel tank. This vapor-return line is connected to a special outlet in the fuel pump. Any vapor that forms in the fuel pump returns to the fuel tank through this line. The vapor-return line also allows excess fuel being pumped by the fuel pump to return to the tank.

I have decided to head down the path of replacing the exhaust manifold myself on my 1992 4.0L YJ. All was going smooth until I tried to disconnect the supply side fuel line from the fuel rail. Failing Mechanical Fuel Pump. Have a 89 YJ carbureted. Haven't had very long and I have had to replace 2 mechanical fuel pumps. One of the pumps was actually bent. Appears to be unable to withstand the pressure. So, I dropped the tank and replaced two vents. Didn't work, need to replace the fuel pump once more.

I just got my '89 YJ if the mechanical fuel pump compensates for too much pressure downstream. He also broke the fuel fill vent, so I'm replacing the tank, and thus all fuel lines - will restore it to normal config with fuel supply and return lines and vent line to cannister unless someone knows that a return line is not really needed.
