I don't usually use glue or ice towers at all, I go with a boomerang tower (with the specialty building, I play on iOS), a couple farms, a sniper monkey, and then supers all the way, with a village of course. As for selling, I don't usually bother, I don't typically run out of space before I get bored with the level of lag and quit.
Well, if you plan to go very late game in BTD5, I highly suggested to go for Temples maxed out with cannons. The Gatling lasers are only good for bloons and aren't very effective (from my POV) towards MOAB class bloons.
