I acquired a K98 yesterday that has import markings by CAI. I am new to the Mausers having collected only M1 and M1 carbine rifles and a couple of 1903 rifles. I need help just understanding what I have. The receiver has byf 41, which I found to be Mauser-Werke KG, Oberndorf on the Neckar and I guess made in 1941.In 1940 "42" was the Nazi code for Mauser Werke AG, Oberndoef a/N. Model: K98. If the receiver has the same serial number as under barrel on the left front side of ring with the bu or bugn proofs then Mauser firm could have reused a sporter inventory action destined for the gunsmith trade as these actions in most cases had the serial number under action etc.
