I've got a 725 sporting with 32 inch barrels, love it for trap, skeet, sporting clays, never used it pheasant hunting and don't think I would. In 28 inch barrels it would be OK, 32 is long for field carry. It depends how far you walk, how thick the cover, etc.

Nova is more money but still under $500.. If you can afford to pay a little more you can get a brand new beretta A300 for around $700. Benelli super nova - best shotgun under 500 in my opinion. Friend got one last week at cabellas for $419. For clay shooting I would definitely recommend an over under!
