First of all, you need to establish the true voltage coming from the alternator. Beg, borrow or steal a Digital Multimeter and using the volt meter, check the voltage coming off of the alternator. Neg lead to a chassis ground point and positive lead to the B+ on the alternator. Then check it at the battery, they should be the same.
